Without A Walk In Clinic Tampa Patients Often Get No Medical Treatment At All

By Christine Snyder

It is only natural that people want the best possible medical care when they sustain injuries or when the fall ill. Sadly, very few people can afford such medical help. The fees charged by hospitals, doctors and other medical specialists are totally out of reach of the vast majority of people unless they have medical insurance. The vast number of poor people does not have medical insurance and without the services of a walk in clinic Tampa patients will be deprived of any care.

In the United States there are more than eleven thousands of these clinics scattered across thousands of areas. They are not the result of any coordinated effort and they are not regulated in any way. In many cases, they are run by churches and charities that depend on donations. Many are owned by pharmacies and there are some local councils that also run clinics.

The treatment offered by these clinics differs wildly. Some only deal with emergencies while others concentrate on the treatment of pregnant women and children. Others offer a wider range of services, especially those managed by pharmacies. One thing that they do have in common is that none of them offer advanced medical treatment and none of them can house in patients that need constant care.

Despite the limited treatment offered by the clinics, they remain extremely popular. Those that cannot afford the services of private doctors and hospitals simply have no choice. Most of these clinics will treat any patient without asking questions about matters such as citizenship and other potentially embarrassing issues. Patients cannot make appointments. They simply have to turn up and wait their turn but most clinics are open for long hours every day.

Clinics have many critics. They agree that the clinics perform a vital role in matters related to primary health care but they criticize the fact that the level of service offered remains at a very basic level. They also criticize the fact that patients have to join long queues and wait hours before being seen. This overload of patients means that those attending them do not have sufficient time to spend with each patient.

Unfortunately, a very small minority of clinics can boast the services of a qualified doctor. Most of them are manned by health workers and nurses. While they do what they can, they are not qualified or trained to diagnose medical conditions and they certainly cannot prescribe medication. This results in a situation where only symptoms are treated instead of the underlying condition that causes the symptoms.

Perhaps one of the biggest worries of critics is the lack of clinics when it comes to keep proper patient medical histories. Their patients are transients so they do not keep records on every patient. This is a huge problem because most physicians depend upon the medical histories of their patients in order to make intelligent decisions about a treatment regime. If there is no history, the treatment may actually endanger the patient.

Critics may have a point when they say that these clinics cannot provide proper medical care. The reality, however, is that the vast majority of patients visiting these clinics have nowhere else to turn for medical help. At least the clinics can help to alleviate painful symptoms and to provide basic treatment.
