Sophrology Method Coaching And Self Help Ideologies

By Mark Jones

While the self-help field has expanded with new programs over the last few decades, there are some programs which have been popular in Europe since the 1970s which are lesser known in the United States. In one case, sophrology method coaching is reported to help individuals find lasting and ongoing peace in all areas of life.

The practice combines Western science and Eastern wisdom to create balance and harmony in life. In doing so, coaches work with clients how to use the practice to manage and reduce stress, explore concepts of mindful living and sleep better. For, the practice uses the body mind connection to balance oneself and the world at large. One of the most common comparisons to Sophrology is that of meditation though the two practices are distinctly different.

The term, sophrology is defined as being the study of harmony while in a conscious state. The roots of the word come from the Greek words Phren meaning mind and SOS meaning harmony. As a result, it is now believed that individuals can remain in a conscious harmonious state on an ongoing basis.

The method was developed in the 1960s by Columbian neuro-psychiatrist and Professor Alfonso Caycedo, to help clients find peace and serenity in daily life. As a result, the practice has now become more widely used by individuals, clinics and mental hospitals. Whether practiced on a daily basis, or with a coach at a clinic or hospital, a number of individuals have found a sense of lasting peace while practicing the basic concepts of Sophrology.

In 1970 while attending a conference, Caycedo commented that the method was born out of studies of the conscious mind. The neuro-scientist and professor also suggested that the practice is designed to be a way of life, a philosophy, a personal development tool as well as a therapy. In addition, Caycedo stated that the basic concept and purpose of practice was to teach others how to live life in a harmonious rather than a traumatic or depressed state.

When first setting out to discover different methods of healing, the professor was drawn to Western medicine. The methods used during early studies included relaxation techniques and phenomenology. After which, the professor decided to keep these practices as part of the new Sophrology self-help practice. Whereas, Eastern wisdom and practices such as mediation and yoga can often be excellent accompaniments to the practice.

Along with these practices, the professor also kept a method known as the mental method which requires a strong focus on the mind to induce mental peace. One of the best descriptions of this Eastern practice is in comparing the practice to that of meditation. Although, while meditation works to clear the mind, the mental method attempts to target and relax various muscular centers of the body.

While having been popular in Europe since inception in the 1970s, the practice is still rarely used in other areas of the world. While this is the case, it appears that the practice could very well be beneficial to people around the world. As such, those whom are familiar with the practice are now hoping to teach others so the practice can spread throughout the world.
