Understanding The Process Of Tubal Reversal Surgery

By Gregory Kelly

Tubal ligation reversal is a procedure that is used to restore fertility in women who previously had a tubal ligation. The procedure of tubal ligation involved having the Fallopian cut or blocked so that pregnancy is prevented. In the reversal procedure, there will be an attempt to re-connect the segments that are blocked to Fallopian sections that are remaining. When considering tubal reversal surgery, it is important that one understands what it involves.

The procedure is done to enable a woman to get pregnant without having to undergo any further medical processes. However, it is not ideal for everyone. There are a number of factors that the health care provider would need to consider in order to determine whether it is will be a success. Some of the factors to be considered are age and body mass index of the individual, remaining length of the tubes, extent of damage to Fallopian tubes and the type of tubal ligation.

The level of success will be more for those who still have a large portion of healthy Fallopian tubes. Also, it is better in people who had the procedure originally done using rings or clips and not those in who it was through burning to close it off. There are a number of risks that the procedure comes with. For once, it is possible that one might be unable to get pregnant after treatment. This is because success rate depends on age and other factors.

There are other complications like infections, bleeding and scarring of the Fallopian tube. For some women, there will be an increased probability of having ectopic pregnancy. This is what what happens when after fertilization the egg gets implanted outside of the uterus. The embryo will be implanted within the Fallopian tubes. The complications and risks should be discussed before the procedure can be started.

The reversal surgery can be done as an outpatient or inpatient procedure. The doctor will use a laparoscopic equipment to make very small incisions within the abdomen. After the incisions are made, the tubes get reattached. The laparoscopic equipment used are very small tubes which are attached to tiny cameras and several other surgical equipment. The doctor will remove blocked fragments before attempting to repair the tubes through the use of very tiny stitches.

After the treatment is done, one is able to resume normal activities gradually. This could take a couple of weeks. The stitches that are used dissolve and never need to be removed. A patient should ask the doctor when the follow up appointment will be required. The rates of success will be varied from one individual to another.

One should be well versed with costs of the procedures in time. It is not usually covered by insurance. The cost will generally be in the range of several thousand dollars. The cost is inclusive of tests that are required, anesthesia and surgery.

The alternative to tubal ligation reversal is in vitro fertilization. This is whereby the egg of the woman is fertilized using a sperm outside the womb. The fertilized egg will then be placed inside the womb. IVF can be an option for those that fail to get pregnant after tubal reversal procedures.
