Why Many Patients Prefer An Alternative Treatment For Eczema

By Ronald Bennett

More than 15 million citizens of America have to live from day to day with skin that itches, that develop blisters, that is inflamed and painful and skin that is unsightly because it is bone dry. Even worse, 20 million more suffer from some of these symptoms at least some of the time. These unfortunate people often find it difficult to focus on anything other that the irritations that they are forced to suffer and their quality of life is often diminished. Most of them search for an alternative treatment for eczema.

Unfortunately, sufferers have to accept the fact that there is no permanent cure for this condition. The best that can be done is to treat the symptoms and alleviate the discomfort experienced by the patient. Nobody is immune from developing dermatitis. It can occur at any age and it manifest anywhere on the body. The severity of the symptoms also varies from one patient to the next.

Even if there is no cure there are at least some medication that can provide relief. Unfortunately, however, many patients experience unpleasant side effects that are almost as bad as the symptoms themselves. It is no wonder, then, that so many sufferers turn towards other solutions. There are indeed many supposed remedies for dermatitis but very little research have been done on their effectiveness.

It seems that this condition frequently afflicts people that suffer from a variety of allergies. Studies have show that the most likely allergens that will cause dermatitis include detergents, soap, perfumes, pet dander, mites and feathers. Certain food allergies also seem to trigger the development of the condition. By avoiding known allergens sufferers often experience almost immediate relief. It may be a good idea to get tested for the most common types of allergy.

Many patients have reported positive results after changing their diet. Dieticians recommend that patients consume probiotics, organic vegetables and fruit and food low in acids. It also seems as if daily vitamin supplements containing B12 and D play an important role in holding the condition at bay. Processed food should be avoided at all times and some experts recommend cutting out all foods containing gluten and dairy.

A surprising percentage of dermatitis patients also suffer from very high levels of emotional stress. Such patients often benefit if they make life style changes that eliminate stress factors. It may even be beneficial to opt for therapy in order to identify the factors that are responsible for those high stress levels. Taking up yoga or meditation or even a relaxing hobby such as painting also seems to help many patients.

There is no shortage of natural preparations that all promise to relief the symptoms of dermatitis. Care should be taken, however, before purchasing any of these remedies. Some even promise a cure and they should most certainly be avoided. Consumer feedback sites often provide valuable information on the effectiveness of these products. Using sunflower seed oil or coconut oil directly on afflicted areas seems to provide immense relief to many patients.

People with eczema have no choice but to live with the condition. There is much that they can do, however, to relieve the symptoms once they manifest themselves. It may be worth it to conduct some research and to experiment with various safe alternative treatment methods.
